Council called on to mark Easter Rising
Cr Patrice Hardy issued her appeal at last Monday night’s December monthly meeting in the wake of an update to members by on approved civic events which include plans to commemorate the Battle of the Somme centenary.
She suggested Council should “respectfully remember all pivotal historic events in their centenary year” and therefore should hold a civic event for the Easter Rising. She also asked that Council produce a report on how they could mark that event and pointed out that this should be done with “urgency” given the centenary was in April.

Hide AdCr Stephen Nicholl responded that he would be travelling to Dublin for the occasion, as he had in other years, “to commemorate those brave soldiers who died in the uprising”.
Cr Declan O’Loan commented: “It’s one of the major events to be comemorated next year and it is important that this council shows itself to be evenhanded through a significant civic event. I urge council would proceed to make the plans to do that,” he added. Councillors generally agreed that a report be brought back to Council.
