Trust members learn about ‘Broighter Gold’ hoard
The meeting was held in the Magherabuoy House Hotel in Portrush and welcomed local historian, author and lecturer, Jim Hunter.
Jim told the story of farm-worker Tom Nicholl who found the hoard whilst ploughing in a field in Broighter, near LImavady.

Hide AdMembers heard about the circumstances of the discovery, and the subsequent fate of the hoard before it eventually ended up in Dublin’s National Museum, following a law suit against the British Museum.
Jim discussed the items of the hoard in detail, notably the decorated Celtic torc and the unique gold boat with mast and oars. The talk was illustrated throughout with slides.
Following questions, the chairman thanked Jim for what had been a fascinating and informative evening and invited members of the audience to take away with them a copy of the free illustrated booklet on the Broighter Hoard.
